In the late afternoon of February 11, 2017, in Decatur, Georgia, 18-year-old Jalen Flournoy was fatally shot in what appeared to be a robbery gone wrong. The incident occurred around 2:40 p.m. at the Eastwyck Apartments off Candler Road. According to a witness, he and Flournoy were approached by three or four men wearing black masks. One of the masked individuals was armed with a gun.
The assailants demanded Flournoy's backpack, but he refused to comply.
In response to his refusal, he was shot in the chest. After the shooting, the men took the backpack, which was estimated to be worth only $10, and fled the scene. When police arrived, Flournoy was still alive, and an officer attempted to perform CPR before he was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
An investigation into the murder led the DeKalb County Sheriff's Fugitive Unit to two teenage suspects. Warrants for their arrests were issued on February 16, 2017. The following day, on February 17, 18-year-old Jamarcus Akeem White was arrested in Atlanta. A second suspect, 19-year-old Destin Robinson, was taken into custody on February 27 in Stone Mountain. Both teenagers were charged with murder and armed robbery in connection with Flournoy's death and were held at the DeKalb County Jail. Jail records indicated that Robinson lived on the same street as the apartment complex where the shooting took place.
