In the quiet community of St. Simons Island, Georgia, the life of Catherine Wilcox Tortorete, a 51-year-old woman, was tragically cut short on Monday, March 6, 2017. A resident of the island for a decade and a pharmacy technician at a local CVS, she was a mother to three children. Her life, however, ended in a violent act that shook the small island community.
On that Monday evening, police were called to a medical clinic in Redfern Village after an employee discovered two bodies inside.
The deceased were identified as Catherine Tortorete and Dr. William Nelson, a 63-year-old physician at the practice. Both had suffered fatal gunshot wounds in what investigators determined to be a murder-suicide. The investigation concluded that Dr. Nelson shot and killed Tortorete before turning the gun on himself.
Further investigation into the relationship between Tortorete and Nelson revealed a troubled history. Public records indicated that both individuals had previously filed restraining orders against one another, though Tortorete had reportedly dropped hers.
