On a summer evening in Ellijay, Georgia, the life of 53-year-old Richard Thomas Danley came to a violent end. On July 8, 2017, Danley was at the home of a man named Douglas Edwin Pritchett when a 911 call was placed by Pritchett himself, claiming his home was being invaded and that he had shot the intruder. When Gilmer County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the River Lodge Drive residence, they found Danley deceased from what were later determined to be multiple gunshot wounds.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist with the death investigation. Their findings led to the arrest of Douglas Edwin Pritchett, who was 43 years old at the time. Pritchett was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with Danley's death. An autopsy would later reveal that Danley had sustained six gunshot wounds, with three of those being to his back, a detail that would become significant in the ensuing legal proceedings.
The case against Douglas Edwin Pritchett culminated in a trial that began with jury selection in late February 2019. On March 7, 2019, a Gilmer County jury found Pritchett guilty on all counts against him, which included malice murder, three counts of felony murder, aggravated assault with intent to murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery. The prosecution had argued that Pritchett's motive for the shooting was that he was 'aggravated' with Danley. Following the conviction, Pritchett was sentenced to life in prison.
In the aftermath of the trial, Pritchett sought to have his conviction overturned. He filed an appeal, arguing that the evidence presented was insufficient and that he had received ineffective assistance from his legal counsel. However, his appeal was ultimately unsuccessful. On October 4, 2022, the Supreme Court of Georgia affirmed his conviction, ensuring that he would continue to serve his life sentence for the murder of Richard Thomas Danley.
