In the early morning hours of August 5, 2017, a tragedy unfolded in the parking lot of a Waffle House in Tifton, Georgia, that cut short the life of Jesse William Hall. The 30-year-old master grill operator was a father of three who had lived in Tifton his entire life. Remembered for his love of fishing, hunting, and working on cars, he was, above all, a man who cherished his children. His life, however, came to a violent and abrupt end during what appeared to be an attempted armed robbery.
Hall and a female co-worker were in the restaurant's parking lot on West 7th Street at approximately 1:00 a.m. when they were confronted by two men. In the course of the encounter, one of the assailants shot Hall, inflicting a wound that would prove to be fatal. The other assailant physically assaulted the female employee. After the attack, the two men fled the scene, disappearing toward the area of Timmons Drive and West 11th Street. When law enforcement officers and deputies from the Tift County Sheriff's Office arrived, they discovered Hall in the parking lot with a gunshot wound.
In the wake of the slaying, both the City of Tifton and Waffle House offered rewards for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Hall's death. The investigation, led by the Tifton Police Department with assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, pressed on for months. In November of that year, a break in the case came with the arrest of 21-year-old Devonte Riggins. He was taken into custody and faced a litany of charges, including two counts of murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and criminal attempt to commit armed robbery. The investigation into the incident remained ongoing as authorities continued to seek information from the public. Riggins was booked into the Tift County Jail, marking a significant development in the quest for justice for Jesse Hall and his grieving family.
