In the late summer of 2017, a dispute believed to have possibly originated on social media tragically escalated, culminating in the death of 24-year-old Heather Smith. On the afternoon of Sunday, August 20, 2017, in Social Circle, Georgia, a shooting shattered the quiet of the Ronthor Drive and Tower Road area. When police responded to 911 calls, they discovered two individuals had been shot. Heather Smith, a mother of two from Covington, was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, 26-year-old Quantavious Banks of Social Circle, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
The investigation, a collaborative effort involving the Social Circle Police Department, the Walton County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and other local agencies, quickly identified a suspect. Desmond Sherron Jackson, 22, of Social Circle, who lived at the address where the shooting occurred, was promptly arrested. It was determined that the victims and the suspect were acquainted with each other, and authorities assured the public that this was an isolated incident with no broader danger.
Desmond Sherron Jackson was taken into custody and held at the Walton County Jail. He faced a series of serious charges, including felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated battery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. In May 2019, a Walton County jury found Jackson guilty of the murder of Heather Smith. He was also convicted on three counts of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and four counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, which accounted for the injury to Quantavious Banks and for shooting at another female victim who was present. Following the verdict, Desmond Jackson was sentenced to life in prison with an additional 20 years to be served in confinement.
