In the small town of Byromville, Georgia, a quiet morning was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the lives of a toddler and his grandmother. On Thursday, January 25, 2018, 17-month-old Jashun Ingram and his 47-year-old grandmother, Priscilla Adams, were fatally shot outside of a residence. A 17-year-old girl was also shot and wounded in the attack but survived.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and local authorities responded to the scene in the early hours of the morning,
around 4:15 a.m., where they discovered the bodies of Jashun and Adams in the yard of a home on Hill Street. During a subsequent search of the area, the body of 60-year-old Willie James Merrell was found in the backyard of a house across the street. Merrell had died from a single gunshot wound, and a rifle was discovered next to his body.
Initially, investigators treated the cases as a double homicide and a separate death investigation. However, as the inquiry progressed, forensic analysis of the evidence revealed a grim narrative. Ballistics testing confirmed that the shell casings found at the scene where Jashun and his grandmother were killed matched the rifle found with Merrell. Further investigation, including DNA analysis, definitively linked Merrell to the weapon. The evidence led authorities to conclude that Merrell had ambushed the family as they were leaving their home, firing multiple rounds and then taking his own life.
While the investigation successfully identified Willie James Merrell as the perpetrator, a clear motive for the tragic murder-suicide remained elusive to investigators. The community was left to mourn the senseless loss of a young child and his grandmother, with the Dooly County Sheriff expressing his commitment to helping the town heal from the devastating event. Jashun, described as a happy and lovable baby with a bright smile, was born on August 4, 2016.
