In the spring of 2018, the life of 22-year-old Darius Roberts was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in Kingsland, Georgia. On the evening of Monday, May 7, 2018, law enforcement responded to a call at an apartment on East Lawnwood Avenue. Inside, they discovered Roberts with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Southeast Georgia Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of the young male quickly
pointed to a person of interest: 19-year-old Evins Harris. After being taken into custody and questioned by the Kingsland Police Department, Harris reportedly admitted to shooting Roberts. He was subsequently arrested and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault, then booked into the Camden County Sheriff's Office. The incident was a somber moment for the community, as a young life was lost to violence.
In the months that followed, the legal process began to unfold for the man responsible for Roberts' death. In October 2019, a jury found Evins Vontravis Harris guilty of felony murder in connection with the shooting death of Darius Roberts. While the jury acquitted him of malice murder and voluntary manslaughter, the felony murder conviction ensured he would be held accountable for his actions. Harris later appealed the verdict, taking his case to the Georgia Supreme Court. However, in a decision made in April 2023, the state's highest court affirmed the conviction, bringing a sense of finality to a case that had brought pain and loss to the family and friends of Darius Roberts.
