In the quiet community of Richmond Hill, Georgia, Susan Karen Wilson Rankin, a 58-year-old woman, became the victim of a tragedy that unfolded within her own home. On Thursday, May 23, 2019, the life of the dedicated nurse was cut short. Authorities were called to the residence on Osprey Drive, where they discovered two deceased individuals. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Richmond Hill Police Department to assist in the death investigation.
The investigation
determined that Susan Rankin died from a gunshot wound. The person responsible was identified as her husband, 62-year-old Larry Rankin. The preliminary findings of the investigation indicated that Larry Rankin shot his wife before turning the weapon on himself in a murder-suicide. Preliminary autopsy results confirmed these findings. While the investigation remained ongoing to determine the motive behind the tragic event, authorities noted there were no signs of forced entry into the home.
Susan, known to her friends and family as 'Susie,' was remembered as a devoted and selfless wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. Born in Savannah, she was a graduate of Bible Baptist School and had earned an Associate's Degree in Nursing from Armstrong State College. For over 26 years, she had been a registered nurse at St. Joseph's/Candler Hospital, where she was known for her ability to connect with patients on a personal level. A member of the First Baptist Church of Richmond Hill, her faith was a central part of her life. She was survived by her son, Christopher, and her sister.
