A dispute over a parking spot at an upscale Atlanta mall on a Sunday evening tragically escalated, leading to the death of 31-year-old Thuan Nguyen. The Vietnamese-American man, who was a father visiting from Antioch, Tennessee, was fatally shot in the head in the parking lot of Lenox Square mall on March 8, 2020.
The altercation began when Nguyen and his girlfriend were waiting for a parking space, which was then taken by a vehicle carrying four individuals.
Following a verbal exchange, both parties went into the mall separately. The conflict reignited when they later encountered each other again in the parking lot. During this second confrontation, one of the individuals from the other group, later identified as 19-year-old Ricky James LaFargue, circled behind the unarmed Nguyen and shot him in the back of the head. Witnesses described the act as an 'execution.'
After the shooting, the four suspects fled in their vehicle but crashed within the parking lot. They then attempted to escape on foot. One person was initially apprehended but was later released after it was determined he was not the shooter. Investigators quickly identified LaFargue as the primary suspect, and a warrant was issued for his arrest just days after the incident.
Ricky James LaFargue remained at large for nearly eight months before he was located and arrested by U.S. Marshals in Brooklyn, New York, on November 2, 2020. He was subsequently extradited to Atlanta to face a felony murder charge. During his trial, LaFargue's defense claimed that the gun discharged accidentally while he was attempting to strike Nguyen with it, a claim the jury ultimately rejected. Despite prosecutors recommending a sentence of life with the possibility of parole, citing LaFargue's age and lack of an adult criminal record, the judge imposed a harsher sentence. In July 2024, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Alice Benton sentenced Ricky James LaFargue to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years. The judge called the killing 'pure evil' and a 'particularly disturbing' act. Another individual with LaFargue's group pleaded guilty to making false statements to the police.
