In the early hours of a Sunday morning, the quiet of Highway 42S in Monroe County was shattered by the screech of tires and the blast of a gunshot, leaving a 35-year-old Forsyth man, Michael High, dead on the side of the road. The tragic chain of events began with a phone call from High's girlfriend, 26-year-old Cierra Bell of Decatur. She had been gambling in Oglethorpe with 38-year-old Wendell Scott, also from Decatur, and asked High to come and pick her up.
An argument erupted between
High and Bell during the drive back to Forsyth, prompting Bell to get out of the car and begin walking. It was then that Scott, on his own way back to Decatur, happened upon Bell walking along the roadside and offered her a ride. The situation escalated dramatically when High, seeing them stopped, crashed his vehicle into the back of Scott's car, sending his own car into a ditch.
High then exited his wrecked vehicle and, according to reports, began to aggressively approach Scott. In a fatal turn of events, Scott responded by shooting High. When Monroe County deputies arrived at the scene around 12:30 a.m., they discovered two wrecked vehicles and High's body, lifeless from a gunshot wound. Both Cierra Bell and Wendell Scott were subsequently arrested and taken to the Monroe County jail to await charges in connection with the death of Michael High. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
