In the spring of 2021, a bright and promising life was tragically cut short in Hephzibah, Georgia. Brenleigh Karson Kitchens, a 20-year-old female, died on Thursday, April 29, 2021, a day after being shot in the head. A 2019 graduate of Lakeside High School, Brenleigh was remembered for her vibrant and compassionate spirit. She was an active student who participated in numerous sports, including cheerleading, basketball, track, and soccer.
Her warm smile and fiery red hair were said to light up any room she entered. She was known for her humor, her love for dancing, and the joy she found in spending time with her friends and family, especially her niece. Brenleigh was also passionate about racial equality and was an organ donor, continuing to give life to others even in death.
The promising future of this young woman was extinguished in an act of violence. The incident took place in the 4300 block of Aintree Road, east of Hephzibah. Following the shooting, law enforcement officials quickly identified a suspect.
Her ex-boyfriend, 20-year-old Jaden Ross of Evans, was arrested in connection with her death. Ross was charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. During a court appearance on May 21, 2021, prosecutors stated that Brenleigh was backing away from Ross when he moved toward her and fired the initial shot at close range. They further alleged that a second shot was fired as he stood over her. It was revealed that after the shooting, Ross allegedly confessed to his grandmother, who advised him to turn himself in. Instead, he went on the run and was apprehended by Columbia County deputies about an hour and a half later. During this court appearance, bond was denied for Ross, with the judge citing a potential threat to witnesses and the safety of the community.
