On a tragic day in Thomaston, Georgia, the life of 32-year-old Rosanna Denise Smith was cut short. On May 23, 2021, a welfare check requested at her residence on Thurston Avenue led to a grim discovery. When Thomaston Police officers arrived, they were met with information that someone inside may have been shot. Forcing their way into the home, they found Ms. Smith, a Black female, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.
The investigation into her death quickly pointed to her ex-boyfriend, 42-year-old John Bussey, also from Thomaston. It is believed that Bussey had come to Ms. Smith's home to return her vehicle, an exchange that tragically escalated into a fatal dispute. Evidence suggests that during this altercation, Bussey shot and killed Ms. Smith, with whom he shared an infant child.
After the shooting, Bussey fled the scene and drove to Atlanta. His escape was short-lived, however, as Georgia State Patrol troopers spotted his vehicle, leading to a police chase. The pursuit came to an abrupt end when Bussey ran a red light and was involved in a car crash. As authorities closed in on the wrecked vehicle, John Bussey took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The case, a heartbreaking murder-suicide, was subsequently closed with the death of the sole suspect.
