In the late summer of 2021, a series of minor disagreements between 19-year-old Jaylon Alexander Eberhardt and 20-year-old Keonte Ragland escalated, culminating in a physical fight. This altercation set the stage for a tragic and calculated act of violence. On the afternoon of September 23, 2021, Keonte Ragland, his 16-year-old sister Deonna Ragland, and their friends, 20-year-old Keishann Rowe and Malachi Housley, were gathered at the Ragland residence in the Catoosa Gardens Apartments in Fort
Oglethorpe, Georgia. When they observed Eberhardt walking through the complex, they reportedly perceived his presence as a sign of disrespect.
A fatal plot was then hatched to lure Eberhardt back to the apartments that evening. Deonna Ragland sent a Snapchat message to Eberhardt, agreeing to meet him at the apartment's playground. Unaware of the danger, Eberhardt began walking from his own home at the Oglethorpe Ridge apartments. As he made his way to the supposed meeting, Deonna Ragland was in simultaneous communication with both Eberhardt and her brother's friends, Rowe and Housley, providing them with Eberhardt's exact location for the planned ambush.
Upon arriving at the playground, Eberhardt was informed by Deonna Ragland that she would not be coming out to meet him. As he turned to walk back home, Rowe and Housley began to follow him. As Eberhardt neared his own apartment complex, he was shot. Despite his injuries, he managed to cry out, 'Help me; they shot me,' before collapsing on the doorstep of a Catoosa County law enforcement officer's home, where he died.
The investigation that followed quickly unraveled the plot. Eberhardt's family informed authorities that he had been communicating with Deonna Ragland prior to his death. While the Ragland siblings initially denied any knowledge of the murder, investigators soon found the gun used in the crime. Malachi Housley eventually confessed to his role in the murder. He pleaded guilty to felony murder and aggravated assault in June 2023 and was sentenced to life in prison. Following a week-long trial, Keishann Rowe, Keonte Ragland, and Deonna Ragland were also convicted of felony murder and aggravated assault. All three received life sentences in the Georgia Department of Corrections.
