Ida Mae Johnson, a 57-year-old Black woman, was killed on October 18, 2021, in a violent chain of shootings that shattered Terrell County and nearby Dawson. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Johnson was found shot at 456 Stonewall Street in Dawson after authorities had already been called to Oak Street in Bronwood, where two other victims, John Baisden Sr. and Joshua Brown, were found dead.
Investigators said the cases were connected, and Johnson died from her injuries at the scene. Public memorial and obituary records place her roots in Bronwood while noting she was living in Dawson at the time of her death, which helps explain why her name is often tied to both places.
