In the spring of 2022, a promising life was tragically cut short in Atlanta, Georgia. Taurus Jefferies Jr., a 25-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on April 6th. At the time of his death, Jefferies was actively pursuing a career in the music industry while also continuing his education. He had been a resident of Atlanta since the age of 13, living with family who supported his ambitions.
His mother, who resides in Alabama, described him as a significant and beloved influence in her life.
The incident unfolded just before noon near the Ellington Apartments at the intersection of 17th Street and Mecaslin Street, a bustling area near Atlantic Station. In the moments leading up to the shooting, security footage captured Jefferies walking with another man. The footage shows one man placing a hand on the other's shoulder, at which point the second individual turns and appears to draw a firearm. Despite being critically wounded in the ensuing gunfire, Jefferies managed to drive himself to a nearby hospital. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
The Atlanta Police Department launched a homicide investigation and identified D'angelo Maddix, then 23 years old, as the primary suspect in the case. A 'Be On The Lookout' notice was issued for Maddix, and authorities offered a $2,000 reward for any information that would lead to his arrest. The charges sought against Maddix included murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
In the wake of her son's death, Regina Whittier, Jefferies' mother, traveled to Atlanta from her home in Alabama. Driven by a mother's love and a quest for justice, she visited the scene of the crime and made public appeals for anyone with information to come forward. Her heartfelt pleas underscored the deep loss felt by Jefferies' family and friends.
