In the late hours of a June evening in Lanier County, Georgia, a burst of gunfire shattered the night and ended the life of 18-year-old Savion McRae. On June 18, 2022, McRae was a passenger in a vehicle traveling on U.S. 221 North when another vehicle pulled alongside and unleashed a volley of shots. The sudden violence of the attack left McRae dead at the scene.
Two other young men in the car with him, a 17-year-old from Willacoochee and a 20-year-old from Douglas, were also wounded in the ambush but ultimately survived their injuries.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to lead the inquiry into the shooting. Their investigation soon pointed to three individuals from the nearby city of Douglas. The first to be taken into custody was 18-year-old Shamond Jaquavious Campbell, who turned himself in to authorities in late June 2022. He was subsequently charged with one count of felony murder and aggravated assault. The investigation continued to unfold, leading to the arrest of a second suspect, 22-year-old Travion Snell, on August 3, 2022. He faced the same charges of felony murder and aggravated assault.
The third and final suspect, 24-year-old Rodarious 'Rod' Swanson, remained at large for a short period, with law enforcement seeking the public's help in locating him. He was described as a Black male, and authorities cautioned that he was to be considered armed and dangerous. His time as a fugitive was brief, as he was apprehended and also charged with felony murder and aggravated assault.
With all three suspects in custody, the case proceeded through the legal system. In December 2024, a Lanier County jury convicted two of the suspects in connection with Savion McRae's murder. Ultimately, all three men responsible for the fatal shooting were sentenced to prison for their roles in the violent roadside ambush that claimed the life of the young man from Douglas.
