In the early morning hours of July 18, 2022, a tragic shooting in Cochran, Georgia, claimed the life of 2-year-old Yasir Satterwhite and left his 4-year-old brother, Tamir, wounded. The incident occurred just after midnight at the Deer Run Apartments on Lucas Road. Shots were fired into the back of the residence where the two young boys were in their bedroom. When Bleckley County sheriff's deputies arrived, they discovered that Yasir had been fatally shot. His older brother was transported to a hospital in Macon to undergo surgery and was reported to be in stable condition.
The investigation that followed pointed to a targeted act of violence, although it remains uncertain if the children or their family were the intended victims. Authorities believed the shooting was likely an act of retaliation connected to a prior incident. The boys' father acknowledged that he believed the bullets were meant for him. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was brought in to assist with the case.
Within weeks, three suspects from Cochran were apprehended in connection with the shooting. Dahmon Jacquez Lemmon, 23, was charged with felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Two other men, 29-year-old Jaquiese Stephen Finley and 20-year-old Kamau Zyon Pasby, were each charged with being a party to the crime of murder and party to the crime of aggravated assault. Investigators stated that the three suspects were acquainted with the children's father. The Bleckley County Sheriff's Office indicated that more charges could be forthcoming as the investigation continued.
