In the late summer morning of August 13, 2022, the life of 19-year-old Crystal Madeline Mendez was tragically cut short in Marietta, Georgia. A Hispanic female, Crystal was a young mother to an 18-month-old daughter, Victoria, and was known by her loved ones as 'Kiki'. She was a graduate of Sprayberry High School and worked alongside her mother in housekeeping. Described as having a heart of gold, a great sense of humor, and being fiercely loyal to her friends and family, Crystal was the middle child with an older brother and sister, David and Keila, and a younger sister, Grace.
On that Saturday, at approximately 9:25 a.m., law enforcement responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots on Olive Springs Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a devastating scene in the front yard of a residence. Crystal Mendez and another 19-year-old, Eduardo Landaverde, were both found deceased with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. A handgun was located near Landaverde's body, leading investigators to believe the incident was a murder-suicide stemming from a domestic dispute.
A neighbor who called 911 recounted hearing a popping sound before seeing a woman, later identified as Crystal, run out while hollering. The neighbor then witnessed the male, Landaverde, shoot her two more times. Emergency medical personnel attempted to revive Crystal at the scene, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The police later confirmed that Landaverde was also deceased in the bushes nearby.
The Cobb County Police Department's investigation concluded that the evidence was consistent with a murder-suicide, with Eduardo Landaverde as the sole suspect. As Landaverde died at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with Crystal's death, and no other suspects have been identified. The case officially remains an active investigation, though it is widely considered resolved. Crystal's family, while heartbroken by her violent and sudden death, expressed that she is now 'as free as the birds in the sky.'
