A quiet Saturday afternoon in Marietta, Georgia, took a tragic turn, ending a police standoff and the life of 35-year-old Courtney Dobberson-Watts. The events began to unfold when Marietta Police Department officers received a Flock Safety camera alert about a vehicle with a stolen license plate parked on Amy Drive. As officers approached the vehicle, the driver fled into a nearby residence.
The man who ran from police was identified as 37-year-old Michael Allen Reno. The home he entered was being rented by Courtney Dobberson-Watts, with whom he was in a relationship, according to their families. As the investigation continued, it was discovered that Reno was also a person of interest in a significant theft of guns and cash from a family member's home in Paulding County. Accusations against Reno included the theft of over $18,000 in cash and approximately $20,000 worth of handguns and rifles from his brother's residence.
With Reno refusing to surrender, a standoff ensued, leading to the activation of the Marietta Police Department's SWAT team, who were later joined by the Cobb County Sheriff's Office SWAT team. During the hours-long attempt to negotiate a peaceful surrender, at least one rifle was visible from outside the house. The situation concluded tragically when law enforcement made entry into the home. Drones were first sent in around 10:15 PM, and by 10:40 PM, SWAT operators entered the residence. They discovered Reno's body, barricaded in a back room with multiple weapons. Lying on the ground near him was the body of Courtney Dobberson-Watts. Both were deceased.
Investigators have indicated that the evidence points to a murder-suicide. While the investigation remains open, authorities have stated that Reno is the suspect in Dobberson-Watts' death.
