In the chill of a December morning in Atlanta, a grim discovery shattered the quiet of a wooded area near Old Gordon Road. The body of a man, later identified as 32-year-old Nicholas Martin Williams, an African American, was found burning on December 13, 2022. The gruesomeness of the scene was only matched by the tragedy of a life cut short. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office would later determine that Williams had been fatally shot before his body was set ablaze.
The case was officially a homicide.
Williams had been reported missing by his family in Cobb County just a day before his body was found. His car was discovered near an LA Fitness at Atlantic Station, though he was nowhere to be found. His family, deeply concerned, had initiated their own searches alongside the Atlanta police. A native of Niles, Michigan, Williams had moved to Atlanta in 2009 to chase his dreams in the music world, enrolling at American Intercontinental University. He was an aspiring recording artist and music producer who had started his own record label.
The investigation into Williams's death spanned nearly a year before a significant breakthrough. In November 2023, 21-year-old Carl Jones was arrested and charged with the murder of Nicholas Williams. The investigation revealed a chilling motive: the theft of Williams's 2022 Dodge Ram TRX truck. Investigators were able to trace the sale of the stolen truck back to Jones. Authorities linked Jones to the OTR street gang and executed a search warrant at a known hangout, where they found him.
During the initial raid, Jones attempted to flee and discard a weapon. Security footage from a DVR seized at the location reportedly showed Jones and two other men with Williams's truck on the day he was killed. One of the men was seen carrying two gas cans. Initially, Jones was only charged with drug, gun, and gang-related offenses and was released on bond. However, after a review of the security footage, new arrest warrants were issued. Carl Jones was subsequently charged with murder, tampering with evidence, and theft by taking. He was denied bond at his first court appearance. While arrest warrants suggested Jones had accomplices, it has not been publicly stated if others will be charged in connection with the murder.
