Deputy Sheriff Charles H. Slaughter, a 29-year-old white male, was tragically killed on May 11, 1912, in Gainesville, Florida. Slaughter, who also served as the marshal for the town of Archer, was attempting to arrest two men, Cain and Fortune Perry, for possessing illegal firearms. Accompanied by another deputy and a citizen, Slaughter approached the suspects' home. As they attempted to make the arrest, the Perry brothers opened fire, resulting in the deaths of Deputy Slaughter and the citizen.
