Samuel Shepherd, a 22-year-old African American man from Umatilla, Florida, was killed on November 8, 1951. Shepherd was one of the Groveland Four, a group of four Black men falsely accused of raping a white woman, Norma Padgett, in 1949. The case attracted significant attention and highlighted the racial injustices prevalent in the American South during that era.
