As he stepped out of his patrol car, he was struck by a .308 caliber rifle fired by the suspect. The suspect then exited his house and committed suicide immediately after the shooting.
Officer Patton had been with the Carrabelle Police Department for one year. He was survived by his wife and two children. His death was a significant loss to the community and his family, who remembered him as a dedicated officer and a kind individual.
