Deputy Sheriff Lonnie C. Coburn, aged 25, tragically lost his life on February 21, 1978, in Brooksville, Florida. On that fateful day, Deputy Coburn confronted two suspects who were wanted in connection with the heinous crimes of rape, kidnapping, and murder of a young woman who was six months pregnant. During the confrontation, the suspects overpowered Deputy Coburn, seized his service weapon, and shot him twice, resulting in his untimely death.
The suspects, aged 32 and 22 at the time, were subsequently apprehended and faced the full force of the law. They were convicted of both the murder of Deputy Coburn and the young woman. Initially, both suspects were sentenced to death for their crimes. However, their sentences were later commuted to life imprisonment. As of November 23, 2020, both individuals remained incarcerated, serving their life sentences.

In honor of his bravery and sacrifice, a portion of State Road 50 near the scene of his murder was dedicated to his memory.
