Martha Steelman, aged 29, tragically lost her life on August 20, 1982, in Miami, Florida. Her death was part of a horrific mass shooting carried out by Carl Robert Brown, a disgruntled teacher who went on a rampage at a Miami welding shop. Brown, who had a history of psychiatric issues and was known for his erratic behavior, entered the shop armed with a shotgun and opened fire, killing eight people, including Steelman, and injuring three others.
