Corporal David Wayne Moss, a 31-year-old officer with the Williston Police Department in Florida, tragically lost his life on July 30, 1988. On that fateful night, Corporal Moss responded to what appeared to be a disabled vehicle near the corner of Southwest 6th Street and 1st Avenue in Williston. Arriving at approximately 2:10 am, he approached the vehicle to offer assistance. However, the situation quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation.
Eight minutes after arriving at the scene, Corporal Moss ceased responding to dispatch calls. When his partner arrived, he found both Corporal Moss and his assailant dead. The forensic investigation revealed that Corporal Moss had been shot and killed in a gunfight. Before succumbing to his injuries, he managed to fire six rounds, hitting his assailant with five of them.
The assailant, identified as David Allen Jenkins, was also killed in the exchange of gunfire. Jenkins had a .25 caliber handgun, which he used to fatally wound Corporal Moss. The incident was a significant blow to the Williston community and the law enforcement fraternity. Corporal Moss was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had served with the Williston Police Department for four years. He was survived by his wife, parents, and two brothers. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, Main Street between First and Noble Avenues in Williston was renamed Cpl. David Wayne Moss Street in July 2008.
The investigation into the incident concluded that Jenkins acted alone, and there were no further arrests or suspects related to the case. The tragic event highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and led to increased awareness and measures to ensure officer safety.
