She turned to prostitution and hitchhiking, which eventually led to her encounters with her victims. Wuornos would rob, shoot, and steal the cars of her victims, including Humphreys. Her killing spree included seven men, all of whom were shot multiple times. Wuornos claimed that she killed these men in self-defense, alleging they had either assaulted or attempted to assault her.
The investigation into Humphreys' murder, along with the other victims, led to Wuornos' arrest on January 9, 1991.
