Jose Lazaro Somohano, a 37-year-old police officer with the Miami-Dade Police Department, tragically lost his life on September 13, 2007, in Naranja, Florida. Officer Somohano and his partner were conducting surveillance related to a burglary when they observed a vehicle being driven erratically. They attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect fled on foot into a house at 28165 SW 143rd Court.
Officer Somohano and his partner called for backup, and two additional officers arrived at the scene. As they approached the house, the suspect opened fire on the officers through a window, using an AK-47 rifle. Officer Somohano was fatally shot, and the other three officers were wounded.
