Anthony E. Forgione, a 33-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on July 22, 2008, while serving as a Deputy Sheriff for the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office in Florida. Deputy Forgione was involved in a critical incident where he was attempting to arrest a suspect who had escaped from custody during a mental evaluation at a local hospital. The suspect, Mark Rohlman, had barricaded himself inside his childhood home on Plymouth Avenue in Fort Walton Beach.
Despite negotiators' efforts to coax him out, the situation escalated, leading the Special Response Team to enter the home after a three-hour standoff.
As the team entered, Rohlman opened fire, fatally wounding Deputy Forgione. The suspect then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. This incident marked a significant and somber moment for the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, as Deputy Forgione was the first deputy in the department's history to be killed in the line of duty.
In the aftermath of this tragic event, there were no arrests or further suspects involved, as the perpetrator had taken his own life.
