On August 17, 2008, Mohammad Uddin, a 44-year-old convenience store owner in St. Petersburg, Florida, was tragically killed during a robbery at his store, the Central Food Mart. The incident occurred when two men, Spencer Peeples and Khadafy Mullens, entered the store with the intent to rob it. Peeples brandished a gun and demanded money from the cash register. During the robbery, Mullens fatally shot Mohammad Uddin after he saw him dialing a telephone.
The robbers also shot and killed a customer, Ronald Hayworth, and injured another customer, Albert Barton, who survived the attack.
The case led to significant legal proceedings. Khadafy Mullens pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Mohammad Uddin and Ronald Hayworth, as well as one count of attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of Albert Barton. Mullens was sentenced to death for the murders and life imprisonment for the attempted murder. His co-defendant, Spencer Peeples, was also convicted under Florida's felony murder law, despite not pulling the trigger. Peeples was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
