Ivarene Lett, a 97-year-old resident of Oakland, was found beaten to death in her sixth-floor apartment in the Van Buren Tower on May 11, 2009. This incident marked her as Oakland's oldest homicide victim ever recorded. Lett, who was known for her vibrant lifestyle despite her age, was an active member of the community.
