Sanford, originally from Stoughton, Wisconsin, had moved to Florida in the early 1980s, seeking a warmer climate and a more relaxed lifestyle. He eventually settled in Ormond Beach, where he worked in various construction jobs and later at Sea Ray Boat Manufacturing. Sanford was married to Doris Barrells, and the couple lived in a beachside bungalow.
