Truong was the owner of the T&M Food Mart located on West Michigan Avenue. On the day of his death, he was found behind the counter of his store with an apparent gunshot wound. The discovery of his body led to an extensive investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.
The investigation revealed that Truong's death was the result of a robbery gone
wrong. Two individuals, Willie Mae Thornton, 39, and her son, Dontonio Diaz Thornton, 19, were arrested in connection with the murder. Dontonio Diaz Thornton was charged with homicide and robbery, while Willie Mae Thornton faced charges of battery, burglary, and violating her probation. The Thorntons had reportedly stolen the store's surveillance recording equipment, which initially hindered the investigation. However, forensic evidence and information from the public eventually led to their arrests.
During the trial, it was revealed that Willie Mae Thornton had convinced her son to commit the robbery and provided him with a loaded gun. She accompanied him to the store to act as a distraction. Despite her claims that she did not direct her son to shoot Truong, the jury found her guilty of first-degree murder. She was sentenced to life in prison. Dontonio Diaz Thornton also faced charges of first-degree murder, with his trial pending at the time.
