Charles Roger Kondek Jr., a 45-year-old white male police officer, tragically lost his life on December 21, 2014, in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Officer Kondek was responding to a noise complaint at an apartment complex on Grand Boulevard around 2:00 AM when he encountered a man who had been knocking on apartment doors. Upon arrival, Officer Kondek was shot by the suspect, who had recently been released from prison on parole.
The suspect then drove over Officer Kondek as he fled the scene, causing further injuries. Officer Kondek succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident.
The suspect, identified as a convicted felon with a stolen gun and an active warrant for violation of parole, was arrested a short distance away after crashing into a utility pole and a parked car. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Officer Kondek had served with the Tarpon Springs Police Department for 17 years and had previously served with the New York City Police Department for five years.
