Raymond Gaines Jr., a 3-year-old African American boy, tragically died on December 29, 2014, in Tallahassee, Florida. The incident occurred at his maternal grandmother's home in the 800 block of Dover Street, where he was visiting with his family. According to reports, Raymond was playing alone in a bedroom when he accidentally shot himself in the face with a firearm.
His uncle, Jaleel Taylor, who was outside at the time, heard the gunshot and rushed inside to find Raymond on the floor with a gunshot wound to his face and another injury to the back of his head. Emergency responders arrived and found the child lying on the floor in Taylor's bedroom.
The firearm involved in the incident was a silver .380 semi-automatic gun, which was found in a shoebox with the serial number removed. Jaleel Taylor, 20 years old at the time, admitted that the gun belonged to him and that he usually kept it in a box. The grandmother claimed she was unaware of the gun's presence in the house. Additionally, a search of the home revealed 233 grams of marijuana. An autopsy confirmed that Raymond died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Following the incident, Jaleel Taylor was charged with culpable negligence, possession of a firearm by a delinquent, and possession of a firearm with the serial number removed. He turned himself in at the Leon County Jail. The case remained under investigation by the Tallahassee Police Department, and the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) noted that they had no prior contact with the child before his death. This tragic event highlighted the dangers of unsecured firearms in homes and the devastating consequences that can result from such negligence.
