Gerhard Reitmann, a 66-year-old white male and Vietnam War veteran, tragically ended his life on August 25, 2015, at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center in Florida. Reitmann, who had served with the Marines in Vietnam and later as a guard for President Richard Nixon at Camp David, struggled with the aftermath of his service. His brother, Stephan Reitmann, mentioned that Gerhard felt the VA was not adequately addressing his needs, which contributed to his decision to take his own life.
