James Flynn "Jim" Turner, a 55-year-old retired Marine Colonel, tragically took his own life on December 10, 2018, at the Bay Pines Department of Veterans Affairs complex in Florida. Turner, who was a white male, dressed in his military uniform and sat on top of his military records before using a rifle to end his life. His suicide note expressed deep frustration with the VA, criticizing its failure to provide adequate care for veterans like himself who suffered from PTSD and other
service-related issues. Turner’s death was part of a troubling pattern, marking the fifth veteran suicide at Bay Pines since 2013.
Turner’s life was marked by distinguished service in the Marine Corps, where he flew F/A-18 Hornets and served as an infantry officer in Iraq and Afghanistan. After retiring, he struggled with his identity and mental health, which were exacerbated by the dissolution of his 27-year marriage. His family noted that he became increasingly aggressive and was even detained under the Baker Act in 2016 after a domestic incident involving his son.
There were no arrests, suspects, or murder investigations related to Turner’s death, as it was determined to be a suicide. However, his death highlighted systemic issues within the VA, prompting discussions about the adequacy of mental health care for veterans. The VA did not comment on individual cases due to privacy concerns, but the incident underscored the need for better support systems for veterans.
