Kevin T. McGrath Sr., aged 47, tragically lost his life on January 23, 2016, in Crestview, Florida. The incident occurred at his residence on Peoria Boulevard, where he lived with his wife, Shanna L. McGrath, who was also killed in the same event. The couple was found dead inside their home, both having suffered fatal gunshot wounds. The shooting incident also claimed the life of Elbert L. Merrick III, a 22-year-old from Milton, whose body was discovered outside the residence.
Another individual, Jacob R. Langston, 22, who was also residing at the McGrath home, was injured in the incident, sustaining non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to his arm and shoulder.
The investigation into the deaths of Kevin and Shanna McGrath revealed that Jacob R. Langston, Shanna's son, was the primary suspect. Langston was charged with the murders of Kevin and Shanna McGrath, as well as Elbert Merrick. According to the authorities, the altercation began when Merrick arrived at the McGrath residence to retrieve some items from Langston. During this encounter, Langston shot Merrick in the head outside the home. Shanna McGrath attempted to call 911 but was also shot by Langston. Kevin McGrath was subsequently shot and killed by Langston during the same incident.
Langston was indicted by an Okaloosa grand jury on charges of first-degree premeditated murder for the death of Elbert Merrick, and first-degree premeditated and/or felony murder for the deaths of Shanna and Kevin McGrath. Additionally, Langston faced charges of animal cruelty, as the family dogs were also injured during the shooting. One of the dogs, Kia, died at the scene, while the other, Jasmine, survived but required medical treatment for multiple gunshot wounds.
The case was investigated by the Crestview Police Department and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The prosecution was handled by Assistant State Attorney Angela Mason. The tragic event not only resulted in the loss of three lives but also left a lasting impact on the community, as the details of the case unfolded and the legal proceedings continued.
