Jalen Devar Bell, a 21-year-old African American male from North Port, FL, tragically lost his life on March 2, 2016, following a shooting incident at Blue Ridge Park. Bell was found unconscious behind the wheel of a Ford Ranger truck with a gunshot wound to the head. He was immediately airlifted to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The incident also involved another victim, Travis Shawn Wright, a 26-year-old male, who sustained gunshot wounds to his leg and arm but survived the attack.
The suspect, Nicholas Berg Popko, a 25-year-old male, was apprehended shortly after the shooting. Witnesses reported seeing Popko and one of the victims wrestling over an object in the park before Bell and Wright attempted to flee in the truck. Popko allegedly fired at them from a distance of five to six feet, shattering the driver's side window and hitting Bell. Popko was found approximately 300 yards from the scene with a Glock .40-caliber pistol in his possession and was taken to the North Port emergency room due to bleeding legs. Before being questioned by the police, Popko admitted his involvement in the shooting.
Following Bell's death, the charges against Popko were elevated to second-degree murder. The case drew significant attention in the local community, with many mourning the loss of Bell, who was remembered as a beloved member of his family and community. The legal proceedings against Popko continued, with the North Port Police Department leading the investigation to ensure justice for Bell and his family.
