Jason Jamell James, a 28-year-old resident of Fort Pierce, Florida, tragically passed away on April 9, 2016. He was born on October 26, 1987, and was known by the nickname "Dat Boy J. Burner." On the day of his death, James was involved in a fatal shooting incident that occurred around 1:50 a.m. in the 500 block of North 31st Street in Fort Pierce.
He was shot once and subsequently transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute, where he succumbed to his injuries approximately 12 hours later.
The investigation into James' death led to the arrest of Kevin Terrell Thomas, a 40-year-old resident of Fort Pierce. Thomas was apprehended by Fort Pierce police officers at his home just a few hours after the shooting. The case against Thomas was built on the testimonies of three eyewitnesses who identified him as the shooter. These witnesses included Vanessa Jones, who was pregnant with James' child at the time, her father Albert Jones Sr., and Lameshia Bowles, a cousin of James. According to their testimonies, Thomas shot James in the head during an argument on the street. The motive for the shooting was suggested to be related to a dispute between local gangs, with Thomas allegedly upset at James for "playing both sides."
During the trial, Thomas' defense attorney argued that no weapon or shell casings were found at the scene and suggested that James might have been shot by someone else. Despite these arguments, the jury found Thomas guilty of first-degree murder with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. As a result, Thomas was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 30 years for the firearm charge. The defense indicated plans to appeal the verdict, but the conviction and sentencing marked a significant conclusion to the case surrounding Jason Jamell James' untimely death.
