Jordan Valero, a 19-year-old resident of Bonita Springs, Florida, was tragically found dead in his home on July 10, 2016. The Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to a call reporting multiple gunshots at 10700 Goodwin Street in the early hours of the morning. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Valero's lifeless body inside the residence. It was later revealed that Valero had spent the evening with friends watching a UFC fight before returning home, where he was subsequently targeted and shot
multiple times.
The investigation into Valero's death was extensive and spanned nearly two years. Detectives believed from the outset that Valero was specifically targeted in the shooting, and their persistence eventually led to significant breakthroughs in the case. On April 3, 2018, two suspects were arrested in connection with the murder. Arturo Gonzalez, 25, and Kevin Guzman, 19, were taken into custody and charged with Second Degree Murder and Armed Burglary. Guzman also faced additional charges of Conspiracy to Commit Robbery. The arrests were a result of the dedicated efforts of the Lee County Sheriff's Office and the Fugitive Warrants Task Force.
The legal proceedings following the arrests were complex. Gonzalez's bond was set at $1.5 million, while Guzman's bond was set at $700,000. During their first court appearance, Guzman's defense questioned the court's jurisdiction, as Guzman was 17 at the time of the crime. However, the judge ruled that the court had jurisdiction over the case. The prosecution's case was bolstered by the testimony of seven witnesses and evidence obtained through warrants for cellphone records. Despite the arrests, investigators continued to seek additional information from the public to ensure a thorough prosecution.
Valero's family, who had been vocal in their pursuit of justice, expressed relief and a sense of victory following the arrests. They had maintained a close relationship with the Sheriff's Office throughout the investigation and were present at the suspects' first court appearance.
