Justine Clawson, a 24-year-old woman from Port Orange, Florida, tragically lost her life on the night of August 26, 2016. The incident occurred in her apartment at the Victoria Gardens complex, shortly after she returned from work at the Hair Cuttery. Clawson was shot four times in the back by her fiancé, Jamal Kareem Davis, during a heated argument over the custody of their son. The argument escalated to violence when Davis punched Clawson, breaking her jaw in two places before fatally shooting her. Clawson's two children, a 2-year-old daughter from a previous relationship and a 1-year-old son with Davis, were present in the apartment during the incident.
Following the murder, Davis took the children and left them in their car seats outside a closed pizza restaurant before attempting to take his own life by crashing his car into a tree. Davis survived the crash and was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder. During his trial, Davis claimed he acted in self-defense, stating that Clawson had been abusive and that he feared for his life. However, the prosecution argued that Davis's only injury was a busted knuckle from punching Clawson, and that his actions were premeditated.
In July 2018, Davis was found guilty of the lesser charge of second-degree murder, as well as two counts of child neglect. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case highlighted issues of domestic violence and the tragic consequences it can have on families. Clawson's death left a lasting impact on her community, and her children were left to grow up without their mother. The trial and subsequent conviction of Davis brought some measure of justice for Clawson's family, but the loss of her life remains a poignant reminder of the dangers of domestic abuse.
