Einstein Mondesir, a 21-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on April 29, 2017, in Delray Beach, Florida. The incident occurred in the Lucaya Delray neighborhood, where Mondesir and several others were gathered in a carport. Witnesses reported that an argument broke out around 2 p.m., leading to the first shot being fired. Mondesir was seen stumbling around a maroon Chevrolet Malibu, screaming in pain, before more shots were fired. The shooter, identified as 17-year-old Steny Louis, reportedly shouted, "How do you like me now?" as he continued to shoot Mondesir in the chest.

Following the shooting, Louis and his cousin, Marvenson Gustave, were arrested. Initially, Louis was charged with second-degree murder and accessory after the fact, while Gustave faced first-degree murder charges. However, in 2019, both cousins pleaded guilty to lesser charges. Gustave, who was 22 at the time, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Louis, who was 20 by then, pleaded guilty to felony battery and received credit for the 866 days he had already spent in jail awaiting trial.

The events leading up to the shooting involved a card game between Mondesir and Gustave. Witnesses stated that Gustave threw money at Mondesir during the game, which angered Mondesir. He ripped off his shirt and challenged Gustave to a fight, but Gustave declined and left the scene with Louis. They returned shortly after in a silver Saturn station wagon, and Gustave allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Mondesir multiple times.

The case highlighted issues of misidentification and the complexities of witness testimonies. Initially, Louis was identified as the shooter by two eyewitnesses, but he later claimed that Gustave was the one who fired the shots. This led to a plea deal for both cousins, reducing their charges and resulting in their respective sentences.

The tragic death of Einstein Mondesir underscores the violence that can erupt from seemingly minor disputes and the long-lasting impact it has on the community and the families involved. The legal proceedings that followed aimed to bring some measure of justice, though the reduced charges and sentences reflect the challenges in prosecuting such cases.
