His death was part of a series of seemingly random shootings that terrorized the Seminole Heights neighborhood of Tampa over a span of 51 days.

The investigation into Benjamin's death, along with the other victims, was extensive. Tampa police received over 5,000 tips from the public, but the case remained unsolved for weeks. The breakthrough came when Howell Donaldson III, a 24-year-old African American male, was arrested in connection with the murders. Donaldson was apprehended after he left a bag containing a handgun at the McDonald's where he worked. A co-worker discovered the gun and alerted the authorities, leading to Donaldson's arrest.
Donaldson was charged with four counts of first-degree murder for the killings of Benjamin Edward Mitchell, Monica Hoffa, Anthony Naiboa, and Ronald Felton. The murders appeared to be random, with no clear motive linking the victims. Donaldson's trial was highly anticipated, but in May 2023, he pleaded guilty to all charges to avoid the death penalty. He was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
