Dove Kiah Lindsey, a 22-month-old girl from Orlando, Florida, tragically lost her life on June 10, 2018. Dove was one of four children killed by her father, Gary Wayne Lindsey Jr., during a harrowing hostage situation that ended in a murder-suicide. The incident began when police responded to a domestic violence call at the Westbrook Apartments on Eaglesmere Drive. Upon arrival, officers found that Gary Wayne Lindsey Jr.
had taken his children hostage after physically assaulting their mother, who managed to escape and alert the authorities.
The standoff between Lindsey and the police lasted approximately 21 hours. Despite efforts to negotiate the safe release of the children, the situation ended in tragedy. SWAT officers eventually entered the apartment to find that Lindsey had shot and killed all four children, including Dove, before taking his own life. The other victims were identified as Irayan Lopez, 12; Lillia Lopez, 10; and Aidan Lindsey, 6. The children were found in their beds, having suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
Gary Wayne Lindsey Jr. had a history of domestic violence and legal troubles. In 2012, he was arrested on an aggravated battery charge against Dove's mother. The family had also been visited by the Florida Department of Children and Families when Dove was just two months old. Additionally, Dove's mother had attempted to file a restraining order against Lindsey when Dove was five months old, highlighting the ongoing domestic issues within the household.
The tragic deaths of Dove and her siblings shocked the community and led to an outpouring of grief and support for the surviving family members. A GoFundMe page was set up to help cover the funeral expenses for the children. The incident also raised awareness about the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of intervention to protect vulnerable children from such horrific outcomes.
