On August 11, 2018, seven-year-old Heidy Janeth Rivas Villanueva tragically lost her life in Jacksonville, Florida. Heidy was in a parked car with her father and younger sibling outside the El Tapatio market on 103rd Street while her mother shopped inside. During this time, a gang-related shooting erupted in the parking lot, and a stray bullet struck Heidy in the head.
Her father, in a desperate attempt to save her, rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries in his arms.
The investigation into Heidy's death revealed that the shooting was connected to a botched robbery disguised as a gun sale. Four men were arrested in connection with the incident. Abrion Price and Trevonte Phoenix were both sentenced to 30 years in prison for second-degree murder, with Price having a 10-year minimum sentence and Phoenix a 20-year minimum sentence. Stanley Harris III received a 25-year sentence, including 20 years for third-degree murder and five years for firing a weapon from a vehicle. Edward Garcia, who was convicted as an accessory after the fact, was credited for time served but was not released due to pending charges in Tallahassee.
The case highlighted the devastating impact of gang violence and the innocent lives caught in its crossfire. Heidy's family, who had moved from Honduras seeking a better life, was left heartbroken. Her parents, Anjelica Villanueva and Leonel Rivas, expressed their grief and the profound loss of their bright and ambitious daughter, who had dreams of becoming a doctor.

Questions were raised about whether better security could have prevented the tragedy.
