Keveon Smith, a 22-year-old from Orlando, Florida, tragically lost his life on January 26, 2019, following a shooting incident outside Club Lit in downtown Orlando. The night began with Smith and a friend arriving at the club around 12:30 a.m. and joining a VIP section with other friends. The suspects, who had traveled from Clearwater to Orlando, were in the adjacent VIP section. Despite no apparent confrontations between the two groups, a minor dispute over space was reported by a bartender.
After leaving the club around 2 a.m., Smith and his friend were confronted by a group that included the suspects. Surveillance footage showed one of the suspects punching Smith in the head and firing two shots at him as he tried to flee. Smith was hit in the torso and collapsed in a nearby parking lot, where he was later pronounced dead at Orlando Regional Medical Center.
The investigation into Smith's death led to the identification and arrest of two suspects: Notier Misael Gomez, 27, and Jahlil Cobb, 23. Gomez was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in April 2019 and extradited to Orlando. He faced charges of first-degree murder with a firearm and attempted first-degree murder with a firearm. Cobb was also arrested in connection with the shooting. The third suspect, who initiated the attack by punching Smith and firing the first shots, was identified by police but had not been arrested at the time of the reports.
The case against Gomez and Cobb revealed that the suspects had no prior encounters with Smith and could not explain the motive behind the shooting. The investigation was aided by a tip linking an Instagram account to Gomez, which showed the phone's location history matching the night of the shooting. Despite the arrests, the search for the third suspect continued, and the case remained active with ongoing efforts to bring all responsible parties to justice. The tragic loss of Keveon Smith highlighted the senseless violence that can erupt in seemingly ordinary social settings, leaving a lasting impact on his family and the community.
