Jalyn Decosta, a 21-year-old African American male from Jacksonville, was fatally shot in Palm Bay, Florida, on November 4, 2019. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning and was part of a violent sequence of events that left multiple individuals dead. Authorities responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Decosta’s body at the scene. Another victim, Jerome Harris, a 23-year-old African American male from Brevard County, was also found dead in a nearby location.
The shootings took place in a vacant lot at Liberia Avenue and Henry Street, with Harris later discovered in a gray car on a grassy lot at the intersection of Liberia Avenue and Henry Street.
Investigators believe that Decosta and Harris may have shot each other during the altercation. Palm Bay Police Chief Nelson Moya stated that evidence suggested both men exchanged gunfire, resulting in fatal injuries for both. The chaotic scene led to multiple 911 calls, with witnesses reporting gunfire and the presence of victims. The violence also triggered alarms at a nearby church. Authorities were also investigating a separate homicide in the area, where Bobby Knight Jr., a 61-year-old male, was found fatally shot in a vehicle on Agora Circle. However, police clarified that Knight’s death was unrelated to the gunfight involving Decosta and Harris.
Following the shootings, Palm Bay police detained two unidentified individuals for questioning. However, no official arrests or charges were immediately announced. The investigation remained ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. The city had experienced a surge in violent incidents around Halloween, with multiple homicides occurring within a short span. Law enforcement continued to examine the circumstances surrounding the shootings, seeking to determine the exact sequence of events and any potential motives behind the violence.
