JoAnn Chiswick Steller, aged 63, tragically lost her life on March 7, 2021, in Dunnellon, Florida. The incident occurred in the Rainbow Lakes Estates development on Southwest Plantation Street. According to reports from the Marion County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to multiple witness reports of a shooting around 6 p.m. Upon arrival, they found JoAnn Chiswick shot to death in the front yard of her residence.
The shooter was identified as her 39-year-old son, Michael Chiswick.
Following the shooting, Michael Chiswick retreated into the house and refused to come out, leading to a prolonged standoff with law enforcement. The Marion County Sheriff's Office SWAT team was called to the scene to manage the situation. During the standoff, Michael fired shots at a deputy and several others, further escalating the tension. Despite numerous attempts to communicate with him, the standoff continued until approximately 1:30 a.m. on March 8, 2021.
When SWAT team members finally entered the house, they discovered the bodies of Michael Chiswick and his 85-year-old grandmother, Flory Chiswick. Michael had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and Flory had also been shot to death. The incident was classified as a murder-suicide, with Michael Chiswick being the perpetrator of both murders before taking his own life.
The investigation into the tragic event revealed no prior criminal or civil cases involving the individuals. Neighbors described Michael Chiswick as a generally nice person who loved animals, though some noted minor friction between him and his mother.
