Leonard Deadwyler, an African-American man, tragically lost his life on May 7, 1966, in Los Angeles, California. Deadwyler was driving his pregnant wife, Barbara, to the hospital as she believed she was in labor. In an attempt to signal an emergency, he tied a white handkerchief to the car's antenna, a common practice in Georgia, where the couple had recently moved from.
